Description

While living in Australia, I lived in an area close to a remote valley. The area was bounded on three sides by steep cliffs; and only the most intrepid person would venture in. The other side was a military establishment, which was off limits to all non-military personnel; this effectively cut the valley off from encroachment. This was one of the few locations where the rare Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos used for nesting. (I was not able to find out why the yellow ears were left out of their name). These are reasonably large species, and would come into my garden in flocks of up to twenty birds to feast on my banksia trees; they are some of the noisiest individuals in the bird kingdom. My whole garden was planted with a variety of trees and bushes designed to attract a number of the local birds. For those who like the jaw breaking scientific name it is the Calyptorhynchus funereus.
