This image of a cave in a rock face containing a storage site for grains and other dried foods is deep in the desert of southern Utah. These were located close to the Kivas (homes) for the Anasazi and other tribes who populated these areas for a number of centuries. This kept their vital food supplies dry and safe for the winter, giving them security and prosperity. Unfortunately, the granaries were a target for other tribes who had little or no food; therefore they were normally placed in a hidden location or places where it was difficult to get to. Many had organized defenses around these sites to farther secure their food supplies.
