For a few days a year the often-barren desert comes to life when the cacti start to bloom. In contrast to the colors of the desert landscape, the flowers are some of the most vibrant colors found anywhere. These hardy plants survive in some of the harshest climates on the planet, with temperatures ranging from minus 20 in the winter to 120 degrees (Fahrenheit) in the heat of the summer. Added to this is due to the sporadic nature of rainfall, some areas can go years without rain; but often when it comes it is in the form of monsoon type storms with most areas drenched with large amounts of water, and dry creek beds becoming torrents which are dangerous for humans and animal life.
