This lighthouse on the mid northern California coast stands out in stark contrast to the surroundings. It has the honor of being the windiest place on the Pacific coast and also the second foggiest place on the North American continent. With these dubious honors, and the large amount of shipping, which is heading for the Port of San Francisco it is not a surprise that there is a lighthouse situated here. Unlike most lighthouses which are built as high as possible to project their light as far as possible, this one was built on a low platform blasted by dynamite; this was to keep the light below the high level fogs which frequent this coast so the light could be more effective. It was built in 1870 and the last lighthouse keeper left in 1975, when an automated light system was commissioned. The buildings serve as a museum depicting lighthouse life and activities.
