This dark image is of Milford Sound in South Island New Zealand. This is part of the Fiordland National Park, which is a world heritage site. It is the southwest tip of the island, and from the south point, there is nothing between you and the Antarctic, because of this there is a high rainfall. The average rainfall is 252 inches or 21 feet (6,412 mm). Hence even with the small catchments above, there are hundreds of waterfalls; many of them flow for a little while after the rains. Many of the rock faces rise directly from the sound, to over 3,000 feet; this gives a dramatic element to this rugged coastline. This is the most visited location because of its great views and hiking and camping possibilities, about 1,000,000 people make this their prime holiday destination; with many returning many times to see the total park.
