Standing totally still so as not to disturb the fish below, this cormorant is looking for a tasty breakfast. This bird is also signaling it is available for breeding as the color of the area around the eyes and beak base are a bright orange. For most of the year this area is a much more muted yellow color. They often catch their prey by diving from great heights; however, in this shallow pond this technique would end in disaster for the bird. Their feathers are not waterproof, so we often see them sitting on rocks with their wings spread out to dry before they can take to flight.
