This location was the place where a unique event happened in the late 1880’s. there were about 500 small settlements in the surrounding area, but there was a large fault line which made travel between the eastern and western ones all but impossible. Mail carriers would travel for about 5-6 hours in the good weather, some to the top and others to the bottom of the cliff face. Then using a winch and rope system they would exchange the bags of mail one at a time, until all was complete. Sometimes particularly in bas weather, they would have to stay overnight, they found a cave part way down the canyon, and would shelter until dawn.
