This plant has been used over the ages for medical purposes by many of the local tribes. They can grow to 7 feet high (2.1 meters), and grows in most southwest deserts. It has been used for foods for ages, the fruits are a deep purple color, and is best eaten when ripe, the fruit when picked, only lasts for about a week. The fruit is loaded with proteins, vitamins and fiber; there are many recipes’ for juices, ice cream, jams and jellies, cupcakes, pies, cakes, and soup using the fruit. The plant is used at times to mark property barriers; this plant is an effective deterrent (because of it’s multitude of highly sharp spikes which are difficult to remove) for both human and animals. Its ability to propagate quickly and with minimal moisture makes this an effective security device.
