We are about a quarter way up the most famous hike in Zion National Park; this is the trail to Angels Landing. We can see the course of the Virgin River as it makes its way through the canyon. Although for most of the year, this river is just a meandering stream, during the violent rainstorms, which strike this desert area, the river becomes a raging torrent removing millions of tones each year from the canyon bottom. The hike to the top is a strenuous one and certainly not for anyone with fear for heights; it is about a 2.5 mile hike to the top with the last 600 yards being on an exposed path along a narrow spine often no more than a few feet wide, with 1,400 foot drops on both sides.
