This is one of the more unique plants in the southwest desert areas. It is a part of the yucca family of desert shrubs. It can have roots going as deep as 36 feet into the ground, which helps explain its ability to grow so tall and survive in some of the most inhospitable climates in the desert. Because they have a fibrous trunk, it is not possible to age the trees using the rings, as they do not develop rings during growth. They can grow as high as 40 feet, and are only found in the Mojave Desert area of Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California.
