This area lives up to its name, although there is little rain in this desert landscape, when it rains there is often up to three inches fall in a few hours. Because the water does not soak into the ground at anything like the rate it is falling, there is a lot of surface run-off. In addition the large catchment area to the right of the wash, the water can get to 6 feet or more instantly in the bottom of the canyon as it is trying to flow to the rivers many miles away. This can set up a dangerous situation for the inexperienced traveller, as these events called flash floods can occur even is there are no signs of rainfall down in the wash area. As there are a lot of dead trees and even large rocks, which can be caught up in the flood the only option is to keep to high ground.
