The rock formations on the horizon are known as “The Barracks”, I have tried to find out how the name was derived, but the most popular one is that during the depression the CCC had a camp at the base of these formations and called it “The Barracks”. Until I get a more definitive explanation it seems to be the best one I can find. From here they constructed most of the trails now in the National Park to the west of this location. Mainly with strong arms and backs, the trails were cut from the hard rocks, and paths built up across ravines and other impediments, todays hikers can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
