Description

This eroded pillar of sandstone rock is along one of the easiest hiking trails in central Utah. But if you continue along where the trail passes the base of the rock, it gets considerably steeper, with a total elevation change of about 900 feet. It is capped with rock from the Shinarump Formation, which is a very hard. This protects the layers beneath by delaying the erosive elements, which would have otherwise reduced this magnificent structure to rubble many years ago. The full trail rises almost to the same level as the top on chimney rock, with an elevation of 6,684 feet when on the top of Mummy Cliff, which is the cliff in the background, and was once connected to Chimney Rock
