Description

This is one of the most perfect examples of Pre-Colombian pyramids in the Yucatan peninsula Mexico; it is the most popular location for visitors. The name (The Pyramid of Kukulkánmeans “at the mouth of the well of Itza” It is a World Heritage site, the pyramid is part of a large complex, and this structure is known as “El Castillo” as with many pyramids in Mexico, the larger one seen here is built over smaller ones, in this case one other pyramid is encased below the outer one. An ornate jaguar throne was discovered in the smaller temple. It is located close to a large sinkhole known of as a “Cenote”, it is named Cenote Sagrado” (Sacred Cenote) and is 197 feet (60 meters) in diameter and is 85 feet (26 meters) to the water surface; the water is 130 feet (40 meters) deep. It was used for a sacred site and thousands of objects which were offered to their gods were found; including, artifacts made from gold, pottery, shell, jade, copal, flint, obsidian as well as human skeletons.
