Coming to the surface after feeding on tiny sea creatures this whale is about to return to the deep in the Alaskan inside passage. These whales spend the summer feeding in the waters around Alaska, and then they swim to the Hawaiian Islands for the females to calf and feed their young. After leaving Alaska they do not feed again until they return in the next year, so they build up significant amounts of body fat, to sustain them and their calves for the trip. Locals and whale experts tell me that each whale has different and recognizable markings under their tails, so if you know what this whale is named this is the view to tell; according to my guide the tail on this whale is over 18 feet wide.
